South African history did not start in 1652.

About This Quote

It’s true that the first European to set foot in South Africa was Dutchman Dirk Coetzee in 1652. However, his arrival was not the start of any meaningful history in the country. A Dutch settlement had been established in what is now Cape Town in 1652, but it wasn’t until 1795 that the fledgling colony was granted the right to establish its own government. Until then, control of South Africa’s affairs had fallen to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which possessed a virtual monopoly over trade.
